Social Campaign: Community-based maternity navigators are challenging racial inequities
Cayaba Care’s maternity navigators come from the communities they serve. They’re former medical assistants, doulas, community health workers or have other valuable experiences. “We provide additional training, so they know how to support women who are either prenatal or postpartum,” says co-founder Dr. Olan Soremekun. “And because they have this knowledge, and because they're able to go into homes and build trust, patients feel heard and comfortable sharing their needs.” Read the story.

Social campaign: Implicit bias hurts maternal health. Training can help.
Dismantling bias may be one of the most important ways to improve outcomes for Black moms. “We know education levels and chronic illnesses alone aren’t causing maternal complications,” says Guilford County, North Carolina community health professional Danielle Deshazor, MPH. “Looking at implicit bias, looking at structural racism helps us get to the root of the problem.” Now she recommends training for health care providers in her area.
